DMHA Complete Guide: What It Is, How It Works & Supplements That Contain It
DMHA shows up in some of the strongest pre-workouts and stimulant fat burners we carry, usually under the name 2-aminoisoheptane. It’s best known for energy, focus, mental drive, appetite support, and thermogenesis; but DMHA is also one of those ingredients where the name, history, effects, and regulatory status can get confusing quickly.
Here’s what DMHA actually is, how it compares with other stimulants, and where you’ll find it in supplements.
What Is DMHA?
DMHA, short for dimethylhexylamine, is a central nervous system stimulant also known as:
- 2-aminoisoheptane
- 1,5-dimethylhexylamine
- Octodrine
- 2-amino-6-methylheptane
Octodrine was originally developed decades ago as a pharmaceutical nasal decongestant before later resurfacing in sports nutrition products, particularly pre-workouts and fat burners. DMHA became especially popular after other high-stimulant ingredients such as DMAA started disappearing from many supplement formulas.
Where Does DMHA Come From?
You may see claims that DMHA comes naturally from plants such as Aconitum or Kigelia, but the evidence for that natural origin is weak. Researchers specifically tested Aconitum and Kigelia plant samples for 1,5-DMHA and found no detectable DMHA in any of the samples tested. That makes the “naturally occurring botanical stimulant” explanation difficult to support.
For practical purposes, DMHA used in performance supplements is better understood as a synthetic stimulant compound, not something comparable to caffeine naturally occurring in coffee or tea.
How Does DMHA Work?
DMHA stimulates the central nervous system and appears to affect catecholamine signaling, including pathways involving dopamine and noradrenaline.
That’s why it is generally included in formulas aimed at:
- Increased energy
- Greater alertness
- Stronger mental focus
- Training motivation
- Appetite suppression
- Thermogenic support
What Does DMHA Feel Like?
Experience varies depending on the dose and, more importantly, what else is in the formula!
DMHA is rarely used by itself. It’s commonly combined with caffeine and may also appear alongside ingredients such as yohimbine, higenamine, synephrine, Eria Jarensis, theobromine, or other stimulant compounds.
Users commonly describe DMHA-containing formulas as providing:
- Strong energy: Especially when combined with caffeine.
- Mental focus: One of the main reasons DMHA became popular in pre-workout formulas.
- Drive and motivation: Some users describe a noticeable increase in willingness to train or stay focused on a task.
- Appetite suppression: This is one reason DMHA also appears in thermogenic fat burners.
- Mood or “feel-good” energy: Some users report a more noticeable mental effect than they get from caffeine alone.
Those reports are subjective, though, and the entire ingredient profile matters. A formula containing DMHA plus 350 mg of caffeine and several additional stimulants can feel very different from another product with a lower stimulant load.
DMHA vs. DMAA
DMHA and DMAA are often compared because they are structurally related stimulants and have both been used heavily in pre-workout and fat-burning products.
DMAA is generally associated with the older generation of extreme-stimulant supplements. FDA has specifically warned that DMAA can increase blood pressure and create cardiovascular risks, particularly when combined with other stimulants.
DMHA later became popular in many of the same product categories.
DMHA vs. Ephedrine-Style Stimulants
DMHA and ephedrine-style stimulants are both used in stronger thermogenic formulas, but they tend to bring a different overall impact to the overall ingredient profile.
DMHA is often included for energy, mental focus, training drive, appetite support, and thermogenesis. It’s especially common in high-stim pre-workouts and fat burners where focus and motivation are part of the appeal.
Ephedrine-style formulas tend to put more emphasis on thermogenesis, energy, appetite control, and supporting fat-loss goals during a calorie deficit.
Both can be strong stimulants, so the better comparison comes down to what else is in the formula and whether you want more emphasis on focus and drive or a more traditional thermogenic and appetite-support profile.
DMHA vs. Caffeine and Other Stimulants

PRO TIP: The biggest mistake is looking at one ingredient in isolation. A product containing DMHA, caffeine, yohimbine, and several additional stimulants should be evaluated based on the entire stimulant profile, not just the amount of DMHA.
DMHA Side Effects
Because DMHA is a stimulant, possible effects can include:
- Increased heart rate
- Increased blood pressure
- Jitters
- Anxiety or restlessness
- Headache
- Nausea
- Difficulty sleeping
- Increased sweating
- A stronger crash as stimulation wears off
The chances of stimulant-related effects can increase when DMHA is combined with caffeine, yohimbine, synephrine, ephedra-style ingredients, energy drinks, or other stimulant supplements.
DMHA and FDA Status
There is also an important regulatory distinction to understand. The FDA states that DMHA does not meet the legal definition of a dietary ingredient and considers it an unsafe food additive. However, competitive athletes should also be aware that octodrine (1,5-dimethylhexylamine/DMHA) appears on WADA’s 2026 Prohibited List as a stimulant prohibited in competition.
DMHA Pre-Workouts We Carry
DMHA remains especially common in high-stimulant pre-workout formulas.
